Mountain bike Instructors Award Scheme Certification
MIAS Certification Levels 1+2
Level 1 and Level 2 courses are delivered jointly. Following the assessment, the instructor and course leader determines whether each participant will be certified at Level 1 or Level 2.
The combined training for these two certifications (including both theoretical and practical assessment) is completed over two days of intensive instruction.
MIAS Level 1
Leader / Instructor Qualification MBL1
MIAS – Level 1: Mountain Bike Leader / Instructor Qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of individuals in non-technical terrain (forest tracks, canal towpaths etc).
Required Skills
Candidates who wish to be assessed at Level 1 must be able to demonstrate basic off road skills.
MIAS Level 2
Leader / Instructor Qualification MBL2
MIAS – Level 2: Mountain Bike Leader / Instructor Qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of individuals in technical and demanding terrain.
Required Skills
Candidates who wish to be assessed at Level 2 must be able to demonstrate strong off road skills including steep drop offs up to 1/2 metre, decending / braking in a controlled manner, effective hill climbing and pedalling techniques. It is unlikely that these skills would be gained if the candidate has been riding for less than 12 months in rough terrain.
The first day includes risk assessments and legal issues. Safe cycle checks, personal and group equipment, personal riding skills at level one, and basic emergency repairs whilst on route, and group management relating to the leadership of groups in the outdoors.
DAY 2
PRACTICE
Day two will cover weather forecasts and sources, level two personal riding skills and personal coaching of individuals, and navigation whilst on route.
All participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
All participants must provide their own mountain bikes, which must be in good working order.
All participants must provide their own cycling helmet, glasses, gloves and appropriate cycling clothing.
The courses take place three times a year (autumn, winter, and spring).
The participation fee includes registration, membership card, MIAS membership, course notes (in Greek), and certification.
A reduced fee is available for early registration, one month prior to the course.
At the end of the training / assessment, successful candidates will have their log books signed by the course tutor.
On receipt of booking a student information pack with details of the course syllabus and course location, will be posted to you prior to attending the assessment course.
